MiPhi Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between Micromax Informatics and Taiwan’s Phison Technology, has introduced India’s first enterprise‑grade Solid State Drives (SSDs) that are designed and manufactured entirely within the country. This landmark achievement strengthens India’s ambition to become globally self‑reliant in advanced tech.
A Step Towards Digital Sovereignty
Rahul Sharma, Co‑founder of MiPhi, emphasised that these SSDs are “a powerful example of what Indian innovation can achieve when backed by vision, engineering excellence, and global collaboration”. The move underlines MiPhi’s commitment to digital sovereignty, self‑reliance, and elevating domestic manufacturing to international standards.
Built for High‑Demand Use Cases
Prasad Balakrishnan, CEO of MiPhi, noted that the global data economy is projected to surpass 180 zettabytes by 2025. To support this growth, MiPhi’s enterprise SSDs are engineered for data centres, high‑performance computing, and critical enterprise environments-with ultra‑fast speeds, durability, security, and scalable performance aligned with global benchmarks.
Designed for India’s AI & Cloud Ecosystem:
With enterprise SSD demand expected to surge-from USD 27 billion in 2024 to over USD 50 billion by 2028-and India’s data‑centre capacity projected to exceed 1.3 GW by 2026, local demand is set to rise sharply. MiPhi’s SSDs precisely meet this need, supporting AI, data localisation, edge computing, and the cloud with robust, enterprise‑grade solutions.
Supporting National Initiatives: “Make in India”:
This launch seamlessly aligns with India’s national strategies such as Make in India and Digital India, aiming to develop indigenous technology and reduce import dependence in semiconductors and data storage. MiPhi’s achievement of being the first to design and manufacture enterprise SSDs locally underscores its broader vision of building a home‑grown ecosystem spanning storage, edge computing, and AI infrastructure.
About MiPhi: The Micromax‑Phison JV:
Formed in late 2024, MiPhi is a strategic partnership between Micromax (holding a majority 55%) and Phison (45%). It combines Micromax’s local manufacturing muscle and market access with Phison’s global leadership in NAND controller technology-Phison solutions feature in nearly one in every four SSDs shipped worldwide.
Manufacturing and R&D Across India:
MiPhi operates R&D centres in Bengaluru and manufacturing sites in Hyderabad (Telangana), Bhiwadi (Rajasthan), and Noida (Uttar Pradesh). Its R&D labs work on firmware, ASIC design, and AI‑driven solutions like aiDAPTIV+, aimed at seamless LLM fine‑tuning and GPU‑NAND integration.
Looking Ahead: Global Expansion and AI Focus:
Prasad Balakrishnan, in a recent interview, shared that MiPhi is developing next‑generation enterprise SSDs-including USB 4.0 and Gen 5/6 variants-with plans to begin global exports by 2026. The company is also focused on building domestic engineering talent through academic partnerships.
