$1 Million Up Front, Accel Atoms AI & X Want Indian-Origin Founders Building the Next Tech Moonshots

Accel has unveiled a bold new chapter in its pre-seed initiative, Atoms, announcing a global expansion with a dedicated AI cohort and a new Leaptech track, collectively aimed at backing Indian-origin founders building the next generation of transformative startups from Bengaluru to Silicon Valley.

Originally launched in 2021 as a pilot for Indian startups, Atoms has already backed over 40 companies with capital and mentorship. Now, the initiative expands into a global founder program open to Indian-origin entrepreneurs around the world through two new specialized tracks. As part of its wider history, Accel has previously partnered with iconic global companies like Facebook, Slack, and Dropbox, bringing a deep playbook to this next generation of founders.

Two Tracks, One Bold Vision:

The new format introduces two distinct tracks under a single mission: to support daring ideas at the pre-seed stage with capital, conviction, and community.

  • Atoms AI: Designed for startups building across the AI spectrum-ranging from lightweight models deployed on the edge to enterprise-grade agents automating complex workflows.
  • Atoms X (Leaptech): Focused on moonshot innovations. These could be breakthrough technologies, category-defining products, or disruptive business models that require long time horizons and unwavering belief.

Both tracks provide not just funding but meaningful, hands-on support-long before a flashy Series A is in sight.

What Founders Get:

Founders selected for either track receive up to $1 million in funding (equity or convertible note), along with over $5 million in credits for cloud services, AI models, and essential software tools.

Beyond capital, Atoms offers:

  • Custom mentorship from seasoned operators
  • Workshops on storytelling, product positioning, and go-to-market strategy
  • Warm introductions into Accel’s global portfolio and network

In essence, it’s not just a check – it’s a comprehensive founder-first launchpad.

Why Indian-Origin Founders?

Accel’s renewed focus on Indian-origin founders stems from a powerful data-backed thesis. Indian-origin leaders now helm 16 Fortune 500 companies, and the global community’s economic footprint is nearing $1 trillion. More critically, India ranks #1 in AI skill penetration, according to Stanford’s 2024 AI Index.

“The talent is no longer just writing research papers – they’re building world-changing products,” says Accel. By supporting this high-potential pool at the very earliest stage, Accel aims to shape the next wave of global category leaders.

How and When to Apply:

Applications are now open year-round. Founders can apply individually or with co-founders.

To be considered for the AI 2025 cohort, which kicks off in November, applications must be submitted by September 1, 2025. This cohort will include 8–10 startups. Meanwhile, Atoms X accepts applications on a rolling basis, giving founders building “impossible” ideas the flexibility they need.
