In a stunning turnaround, Suzuki Motor Corp has outpaced luxury rival Mercedes‑Benz to claim the top spot among importers in Japan for June. This surge was fueled by the runaway success of India-made compact SUVs, especially the Jimny Nomad and the Fronx.
Suzuki’s Meteoric Rise in Japan:
Suzuki imported a total of 4,780 vehicles into Japan in June-a staggering 230‑fold increase compared to the previous year-according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association. This marks Suzuki’s second time at #1 this year, having also topped the list in April.
The Jimny Nomad Phenomenon:
At the heart of this success is the Jimny Nomad, a 5-door version of Suzuki’s cult-favorite compact off-roader. Priced around ¥2.65 million (≈ US $18,300), it generated 50,000 pre-orders within days of its April launch-far exceeding the monthly sales goal of 1,200 units. New bookings were suspended just four days after launch due to overwhelming demand.
To match this demand, Suzuki is ramping up production at its Indian plants starting July.
Fronx Joins the Charge:
In addition to the Jimny Nomad, Suzuki has also been shipping the India-built Fronx SUV to Japan since October 2024, contributing to the import surge. Both models highlight how Indian manufacturing is reshaping global automotive flows.
🇯🇵 What Japanese Consumers Want:
Analysts say Japanese buyers prioritize affordability and practicality over country of manufacture. Takeshi Miyao of Carnorama commented, “Japanese consumers don’t particularly care whether vehicles are produced in Thailand, India or Japan if they want a particular car”. This contrasts sharply with US manufacturers like GM and Ford, which struggle to offer similarly Japan-friendly models.
Honda and Other Players Join the Trend:
Following a similar playbook, Honda has seen a surge in imports of its India-made WR-V compact SUV, priced from ¥2.1 million. Honda’s registrations jumped around 22-fold in 2024, with over 45,000 units imported. This made Honda the top importer in Q1 2025, while Suzuki ranked third for the first half of 2025.
H1 2025: Mercedes Still Leads Overall:
While Suzuki dominated June’s imports, Mercedes-Benz retained the leadership in cumulative imports for the first half of 2025, with 25,016 units, followed by Honda (~22,000) and Suzuki in third. Nissan’s Kicks and Jeep also made notable appearances in Japan’s import market.
🇮🇳 India’s Growing Clout in Auto Export Strategy:
Automakers are increasingly tapping India’s low-cost manufacturing for global markets. Suzuki anticipates India’s annual car sales reaching 20 million by 2047, with Maruti Suzuki targeting a 50% market share by 2030. By focusing on small, value-driven SUVs, Indian production is becoming central to both domestic and export strategies.
Why This Matters:
- Global supply chain shift: Car manufacturing is increasingly globalized-and India is a key hub.
- Changing consumer dynamics: Budget-conscious demand in Japan is boosting small SUV imports.
- Export-driven Indian economy: India is solidifying its role as a global auto powerhouse.
